Hembo and Greeny made so many excellent points this week regarding the Negro League statistics being recognized (finally). For people who are opposed to making these stats legitimate, sometimes I just shake my head and find myself so exasperated. It makes me almost depressed, I mean, I just can’t understand how human nature often displays the worst of its traits, like jealousy, fear, hatred, prejudice. Makes me angry but more often just sad.
So it’s great that Greeny and Hembo had an arsenal of words to fend off the haters, who purport themselves to have real, worthwhile arguments when they choose to oppose what was finally done. But it’s just utter nonsense, it reminds me a little of those who argue that the Confederate statues should remain standing, it just doesn’t make a lot of sense when you really think about it, and I’ve kind of had enough.
Recently Greeny, you attempted to live by George Costanza’s “Do The Opposite” rule to pick football games. You were doing quite well, but it lasted only a short while. Studies show that the reason for this is simple: eventually you started doing the “opposite of the opposite”, or the opposite of your first instinct, and that’s the opposite of what you want. It’s why George Costanza’s life went back to pretty much the way it was in Season 6 (and of course, because the show wouldn’t have been very good if it hadn’t.) But this opposite rule is very tricky – what you need to remember is to recognize your FIRST INSTINCT. That’s the key, the immediate instinct that you have. Then you do the opposite.
What happened is that you started to mistake your first instinct, after choosing the opposite so many times, the opposite started to mask itself as your first instinct. Then you chose the opposite, that will get you nowhere, back to square one.
So be cognizant of that first instinct. It’s obvious that you have the Costanza in you, just as I do, and if you choose the opposite of that instinct, you can’t go wrong.
